As a British citizen, the thought of relocating abroad, particularly to a sunny and culturally rich destination like Malaysia, has become increasingly appealing. The current state of affairs in the UK has left me somewhat disillusioned, prompting me to explore greener pastures, where, I believe, my family and I can enjoy a better quality of life. After some research, the Malaysia My Second Home visa has emerged as one of the more appealing options, offering a range of benefits that, certainly by the looks of things, may well improve our lives significantly. Financial Benefits One of the most compelling aspects of MM2H, as it's known colloquially, for a British family is the financial advantages it offers. For one, the cost of living in Malaysia is considerably lower than in the UK, allowing for a more comfortable and more fulfilling lifestyle, without the financial strain hanging over us like a sword of Damocles. Whether it's the affordable shelter, lower utility bills, or the cost of groceries and eating out, our savings would be substantial in Malaysia. Coupled with the strong Sterling to Malaysia Ringgit exchange rate, the monetary tailwinds become even greater. In fact, the way it looks, we may actually be able to live like reasonably well-to-do expats over there. Moreover, whilst on MM2H, all foreign income is tax-free. This includes the funds we'd periodically remit from our UK bank. But undoubtedly, for others who rely on their pension, investments, or another income source from abroad, this tax-free rule would be a wonderful windfall too. Knowing this, you may even conclude that relocating to Malaysia on MM2H isn't just desirable but would actually be the financially more prudent thing to do... Weather and Surroundings The weather in Malaysia is another factor that draws us to this Southeast Asian country. Unlike the British climate, Malaysia offers a sunny, equatorial climate year-round. I don't have to tell you that the thought of waking up to blue skies nearly every day, with beautiful beaches and lush greenery just a short drive away, is incredibly appealing. Not to mention the much more outdoor-oriented lifestyle we can look forward to. These things alone are getting us all quite excited. Language and Community Now, typically, a major concern when moving overseas is the potential language barrier. However, Malaysia offers a significant advantage in this regard, given that English is widely spoken. As it happens, it's even the primary medium of instruction in universities and schools. This is a quite a relief, especially when thinking about our three teenage kids, since, clearly, we want them to continue their schooling seamlessly. Additionally, Malaysia has an ever-burgeoning British expatriate community. And, frankly, knowing that there's many other Brits who've made the move and successfully settled in Malaysia is reassuring. It suggests that the transition may actually turn out smoother that you may initially foresee. After all, there should be ample opportunities to connect with others who share a similar background and experience. Education and Healthcare Another big consideration is the quality of education and healthcare in Malaysia, for obvious reasons. Let's face it, these are not things you want to muck around with. Fortunately, Malaysia boasts a range of excellent, yet affordable international schools, including a good number that follow the British curriculum. So this ensures that our kids can continue enjoying a high standard of education. Meanwhile, the medical care in Malaysia is top-notch as well, with many hospitals and clinics accredited internationally. Better yet, the cost of healthcare in Malaysia, in spite of the world-class quality, is relatively low. In fact, just like Singapore, Malaysia, too, has become known as a medical tourist hub. AFAIC, this makes it an excellent choice for our family on this front too. Social Cohesion Finally, we feel that one of the most attractive aspects of Malaysia is its social cohesion. Malaysia is known for its multicultural society, where people of various ethnicities and religions live harmoniously together. It appears that this sense of unity and community is something may be on somewhat of downward slope in the UK. So it's refreshing to see a country where diversity is actually celebrated, whilst social harmony is maintained. Awesome. Well done to Malaysia. All told, I think it's pretty clear that the MM2H visa offers a ton of benefits; to the extent that the idea of relocating to Malaysia may actually be the path of least resistance. Sure, a step like this isn't for everyone, though we reckon that, as we speak, Malaysia promises a quality of life that's quite tough to match in the UK. And going forward, we're becoming more and more convinced that MM2H could well be the key to a brighter, more fulfilling future for our family.
